Tapegerm begins with a fragment—a loop, a phrase, a stray sound pulled from the edge of a recording. These small pieces are seeds. On their own, they might feel unfinished, but in the hands of others they take root, grow, transform, and return in unexpected forms.
Briyan Frederick Baker started Tapegerm as an artist activity on his homemademusic.com site and it quickly developed into a community founded by Baker, Chris Phinney (Mental Anguish/Harsh Reality), Scott Carr (hebephrenic), Bev Stanton (Arthur Loves Plastic) and J Mundock.
What makes Tapegerm different is its commitment to continual evolution of sounds. A recording is never final. It can germinate and each germ can be reshaped, layered, broken apart, and rebuilt by anyone who encounters it. Over time, these sounds pass through countless interpretations, becoming something far beyond their original form—an ever-changing organism built through collaboration.
At its core, Tapegerm is about sharing and process. It invites musicians, artists, and listeners into a cycle where creation doesn’t stop at release. Instead, it expands outward, encouraging participation, reinterpretation, and discovery. Every contribution adds another layer to the story, ensuring that the music is always in motion, always becoming something new.
